AN ODE TO THE
SWANSEA TRIP
Brighton Welsh all
went to Swansea
To sing with the Welshmen, over there,
To join them in a love of song,
A privilege, so rare.
Morriston, our
concert evening destination,
The coach it took us there.
The first thing we found on arriving?
A Balti house & pub. Not fair.
Into Morriston
church we went together,
Into the proverbial lions den
and were met by friends, some old some new,
The Choir of the Cambrian men.
The concert time
arrived at last,
First on were the gallant Cambrian men
With a variety of renditions,
From Cwm Rhondda to Dead Men.
Next came someone
very different
in contrast to the deep voices of the men.
The clear beautiful voice of
a soprano, called Bronwen.
Bryan Myles, the
Cambrian conductor
Said, ‘Follow that, if you can’.
Yes, it was our turn next, the piano played,
And then ‘God’s Choir’ began!!
From the first note
to the last
We gave of all we had.
Weeks of rehearsals had paid off
And we sounded . . . not half bad.
Concentration was
not lacking,
We even smiled, now and then.
Which showed we were enjoying
being there, with the Cambrian men.
We all looked very
smart
In DJs, White shirts and ties.
Until some fool decided, for a change,
To dress different, in disguise.
Announced was ‘With
Cat-Like Tread’,
and he appeared, too much surprise,
In dinner suit and pirates scarf
And tried conducting with one eye.
And when the concert
over,
and the presentations made,
We all retired to a rugby club
Where food and drink was laid.
The clocks went back
during that night
For most of us an hour in bed
But those who stayed around the bar
Another drink instead!!
